
The Irish Branch of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers was formally established in 1974 to promote the benefits of ICS membership.
Member of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers (MICS) is internationally recognized as a mark of professionalism in the shipping industry. To become a member (MICS), candidates must pass the examinations and satisfy the Controlling Council of their suitability.
Fellowship (FICS), which permits a person to be described as a Chartered Shipbroker, is granted to a member who has reached a position of seniority and influence in the shipping world.
Membership is now enjoyed by over 3,900 people throughout the world with other Institute International Branches established in India, Singapore, Hong Kong, Canada, Australia/New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Cyprus, Germany, Greece, UAE, Kenya and Ireland as well as 12 branches in the United Kingdom.
The Irish Branch offers 14 correspondence courses and a successful candidate is required to complete seven, to be considered for membership. The qualifying examinations, held annually, test candidates on general subjects relating to shipping plus a choice of specialist papers in such topics as Dry Cargo Chartering, Ship Management, Ship Sale and Purchase, Tanker Chartering, Liner Trade and Port Agency.
