To achieve Professional Qualifying Examinations, candidates must pass, or gain an exemption from all Group 1 subjects plus 3 others from Groups 2/3. Candidates may select the following options in respect of Groups 2/3.

Shipping Business must be taken in the first year. The remaining subjects may be taken in any order but candidates must sit a minimum of two subjects at their first attempt ('sitting' means a genuine effort to answer five questions in each paper).
The Foundation Diploma consists of the Introduction to Shipping Course from Group 1 of the Professional Qualifying Examinations (PQE) plus an additional subject of the candidate’s choice from Group 2.
The Advanced Diploma consists of the Shipping Business Course from Group 1 of the Professional Qualifying Examinations (PQE) plus an additional subject of the candidate’s choice from Group 2.
Foundation and Advanced Diploma Candidates must sit both the compulsory subject and their chosen Specialist subject in the same examination year. Exemptions are not given for candidates sitting for the Foundation Diploma or the Advanced Diploma.
Holders of the Foundation Diploma only have to take 2 subjects (Shipping Business plus one other) in their first sitting for PQE and holders of the Advanced Diploma only have to take 2 subjects of their choice in their first sitting for PQE. The PQE must be completed within five years from the first sitting.
Candidates with relevant professional or educational qualifications, validated by ICS, may apply for exemptions to a maximum of four subjects
The examinations takes place in April every year at specified centers worldwide. PLEASE NOTE that any candidate wishing to take the exam, other than in a specified centre, needs to contact ICS in London no later than October 31st to see if this can be arranged. Supplementary charges may be payable.
In 2012 the Irish Branch Examinations will be held in the Dublin Port Centre, Alexandra Road, Dublin 1.
