a) he/she shall be engaged as a principal, director, or employee in a Shipbroking Company or in a business having a bona fide connection with Shipbroking at the time of his/her application for election. Employment afloat in the merchant marine shall be considered as business having a bona fide connection with Shipbroking.
b) he/she shall, unless granted a dispensation therefrom under these Bye-Laws, have passed the Examination or have submitted to the satisfaction of the Education and Training Committee a dissertation in lieu thereof, and
c) in addition he/she shall produce such evidence or submit to such additional oral or written examination (as the Education & Training Committee shall require) to determine or test his/her practical ability with the Royal Charter Paragraph 2(1)
Membership via dissertation is only available to applicants aged over 35.

Benefits of membership for MICS members are outlined on the ‘Membership benefits’ page at the end of this section.

Once eligible, applicants may apply as follows:

* Complete and sign the application for membership form online or obtain one from the local Branch.

* Print, sign and submit it either to your local branch or forward it direct to ICS head office in London.

Your application form has to be endorsed by your local branch and ICS vetting committees before being forwarded to the Council for approval.

The following is an extract from the ICS Byelaws outlining the conditions necessary to become a Member.

Although the Byelaws state 'shipbrokers', ICS membership is much wider and applies to any member of commercial shipping with a connection to shipbroking. We have lawyers, insurers, brokers, agents, managers, liner and port agents amongst our membership.

If in any doubt please contact membership@ics.org for further clarification.

To be eligible for election as a Member, a person needs to comply with the following conditions:

* Shall not be less than 21 years of age

* He/she shall have passed the professional qualifying exams of the Institute or submitted an acceptable Dissertation in lieu thereof, unless exempted there from under these Byelaws: and

* Shall have satisfied the Controlling Council that he or she is a fit and proper person to become a Member;

Upon successful election and payment of the appropriate fee, the candidate will receive a certificate stating that he or she is a Member of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers and will thereafter be able to add the initials MICS after his or her name.

The certificate shall at all times remain the property of the Institute and has to be returned if for any reason the person ceases to be a Member (at which time the right to be called a Member will cease).

Those persons meeting the above conditions may apply for election to become a Member of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers.
